The Lower Kootenay Band said it is too early to say if the remains belonged to former students of the school. But the discovery adds to a rising tally of such unmarked grave sites across the country. The grim finds have prompted national outrage and fuelled calls by some to cancel the 1 July Canada Day holiday. Indigenous leaders have said they expect more graves will be found as investigations continue. "You can never fully prepare for something like this," said Chief Jason Louie of the Lower Kootenay Band, which is a member of the Ktunaxa Nation. Covid common in pet cats and dogs, study finds

Covid common in pet cats and dogs, study finds IMAGE COPYRIGHT GETTY IMAGES image caption Most infected pets tend to be asymptomatic or display mild Covid symptoms Covid is common in pet cats and dogs whose owners have the disease, research suggests. Swabs were taken from 310 pets in 196 households where a human infection had been detected. Six cats and seven dogs returned a positive PCR result, while 54 animals tested positive for virus antibodies. "If you have Covid, you should avoid contact with your cat or dog, just as you would do with other people," Dr Els Broens, from Utrecht University, said. "The main concern is not the animals' health but the potential risk that pets could act as a reservoir of the virus and reintroduce it into the human population." The authors of the study said no evidence of pet-to-owner transmission had been recorded to date but it would be difficult to detect while the virus was still spreading easily between humans. Most infect...

CCP 100: Xi warns China will not be 'oppressed' in anniversary speech media caption Some of the celebrations at Tiananmen Square on Thursday China's President Xi Jinping has warned that foreign powers will "get their heads bashed" if they attempt to bully or influence the country. He delivered a defiant speech at an event marking the centenary of the ruling Communist Party on Thursday. Mr Xi also said Beijing would not allow "sanctimonious preaching", in remarks widely seen as directed at the US. It comes as China faces criticism over alleged human rights abuses and its crackdown in Hong Kong. Relations between the US and China have worsened in recent times over trade, espionage and the pandemic. The issue of Taiwan is also a major source of tension. While democratic Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state, Beijing views the island as a breakaway province. The US, under its own laws, is required to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself should ...
